    Night at the Flagler | Friday, August 2 | 6:00 - 9:00 pm

This special event has a limited capacity so if you wish to attend, purchase your ticket today! Friday evening’s event will immerse conference attendees in Palm Beach history and culture during a program and on-site reception at the Flagler Museum. When it was completed in 1902, the New York Herald proclaimed that Whitehall, Henry Flagler's Gilded Age estate in Palm Beach, was "more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world." During the last 122 years, Whitehall has been many things: a private home, a private club, a grand hotel - and for the last 65 years, a museum and National Historic Landmark. Stripped of nearly all its contents a hundred years ago, today Whitehall’s appearance is nearly indistinguishable from when it was completed in 1902. The story of the restoration of Whitehall and the recovery of its contents over the last 25 years is one of incredibly good luck, two dozen capital projects, and a lot of very hard work by a team led by the Museum’s Executive Director, John Blades.

The evening will begin with a fascinating presentation from Mr. Blades titled “From an Abandoned Hotel to a Nationally Recognized Museum and National Historic Landmark.”

Purchase Rosa Lowinger's Book, Dwell Time

Order your copy of Saturday Luncheon's Featured Speaker, Rosa Lowinger's latest book, Dwell Time. Your book will be available for pick up at the registration desk upon check-in at the conference, and Rosa will be available on Saturday to sign your copy. Learn more about Rosa's beautiful memoir below:

Renowned art conservator Rosa Lowinger spent a difficult childhood in Miami among people whose losses in the Cuban revolution, and earlier by the decimation of family in the Holocaust, clouded all family life.

After moving away to escape the “cloying exile’s nostalgia,” Lowinger discovered the unique field of art conservation, which led her to work in Tel Aviv, Philadelphia, Rome, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Charleston, Marfa, South Dakota, and Port-Au-Prince. Eventually returning to Havana for work, Lowinger suddenly finds herself embarking on a remarkable journey of family repair that begins, as it does in conservation, with an understanding of the origins of damage.

Inspired by and structured similarly to Primo Levi’s The Periodic Table, this first memoir by a working art conservator is organized by chapters based on the materials Lowinger handles in her thriving private practice Marble, Limestone, Bronze, Ceramics, Concrete, Silver, Wood, Mosaic, Paint, Aluminum, Terrazzo, Steel, Glass and Plastics. Lowinger offers insider accounts of conservation that form the backbone of her immigrant family’s story of healing that beautifully juxtaposes repair of the material with repair of the personal. Through Lowinger’s relentless clear-eyed efforts to be the best practitioner possible while squarely facing her fraught personal and work relationships, she comes to terms with her identity as Cuban and Jewish, American and Latinx.

Dwell Time is an immigrant’s story seen through an entirely new lens, that which connects the material to the personal and helps us see what is possible when one opens one’s heart to another person’s wounds.

This bus tour of Palm Beach plans to stop at three key parks in Palm Beach that each take unique approaches to resiliency. Bradley Park, the former site of E.R. Bradley’s illegal gambling casino, underwent a restoration funded by the Preservation Foundation in 2017.
